1,2-Dioleoyl-3-trimethylammonium propane (chloride salt), abbreviated as DOTAP-Cl, is a cationic liposome that is soluble in alcohols (such as tert-butanol) and other common organic solvents and is widely used as a liposome transfection reagent. DOTAP-Cl is composed of a dioleoyl fatty acid chain, a glycerol backbone, and trimethylammonium chloride. When mixed with DNA, it forms a stable complex that fuses with the cell membrane and releases DNA into the cytoplasmic sol, making it a common carrier for the delivery of nucleic acids and proteins.
